I used to like 30 Rock but after seeing this episode I don't like it that much.
Feminists have written about misogyny in 30 Rock, if feminism was really about equality then feminists would have spoken out against this violent misandry in 30 Rock. The fact that they haven't spoken out against this till now but have been noticing misogyny and have been ranting about misogyny in 30 Rock shows, really how much feminism and feminists value gender equality.
Before starting to write this blogpost, I searched the net if anyone else has written about 'Misandry' in 30 Rock, to my surprise there weren't any, but when I searched for 'Misogyny' in 30 Rock, at least two articles were coming up.
Please watch the above mentioned video, the misandric scene is towards the end, where Paul and Jenna exchange vows. Can you imagine how much furor it would have created if the genders were reversed? On the next day of it's airing itself, it would have generated articles and discussions lambasting how misogynistic it was. What is to be noted in the video is, the violent misandric act is written to appear self inflicted rather than being perpetrated by another person. Jenna by her vow, is an enabler of the violent misandric act, which is as good as she doing the act herself. By writing it as self inflicted, they are trying to save their necks by passing off the responsibility of the action onto the victim. No sane, normal person would allow self injury of any kind in any situation, self injury is a disorder and requires a lot of love and sympathy to bring the sufferers out of it.
Another shocking thing is the vivid and graphic language the violent misandric act is expressed and described in. I still can't believe it passed the censoring authority, considering the fact that 30 Rock is TV14 rated, regardless of what rating it has, if the genders were switched, it would have had a hard battle coming on TV, it wouldn't even have been written by females writers of 30 Rock in the first place.
For their misandry, they twisted a lovely thing like marriage, which should be comforting and nurturing into a masochistic contract. To please Jenna's sexual desires, Paul is forced willingly to the length of injuring himself in the most dehumanizing way.
If this is not misandry on a TV show with worldwide viewership I don't know what else would be. As regards to the misogyny mentioned in the other articles, it is not misogyny, comedy shows have been making fun of bodily functions of men, making comedy at the expense of male characters since ages. Just because in 30 Rock women's bodily functions are made fun of and comedy is made at the expense of female characters doesn't make it any more misogynistic.
